Lahore's Smog Crisis: 8-Year Battle Ahead to Clear the Air

The air quality index (AQI) of Pakistan second biggest 15 million populated city Lahore  is unhealthy for 275 days annually, with temperatures rising by 3.2 degrees Celsius. The residents face serious health risks from pollutants. Shockingly, 70% of Lahore's smog originates locally, while 30% comes from India. Punjab government says that individual and collective efforts will  require 8-10 years to contain smog in eastern city of Lahore .

Key Pollutants

Many hotspots in Lahore are plagued by methane clouds and heat islands. The city's pollution is attributed to:

- 1,800 of 45,000 motorcycles emitting smoke

- 100,000 vehicles contributing to pollution

- 1,200 kilns

- 60,800 industrial units

Government Action

A multi-sector mitigation plan, includes:

- Demolishing 700 kilns, with 212 in Lahore

- Conducting 15,000 industrial unit visits

- Sealing 64 mills

- Demolishing 152 factories

- Promoting efficient farmer waste disposal practices

- Filing over 400 FIRs against those burning crop residue

- Deploying targeted anti-smog squads to monitor vehicle emissions

- Ensuring no smoky vehicles enter Lahore without proper fitness certificates
